Mwense District is located in the central part of Luapula Province, about 110 km away from Mansa District which is the Provincial Capital. The total area of the district is approximately 2 433.1 km2. It shares borders with Mwansabombwe in the north, Chipili in the east, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the west and Mansa in the south.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES
The biggest economic activity in the district is subsistence farming and fishing along the valley via the Luapula River. Many residents are also involved in small scale livestock rearing of mainly goats and chickens.
The Mununshi Banana Scheme, now operating as Mununshi Fruit Company Limited (MFCL) in Mwense, Zambia’s Luapula Province, is a revive agriculture project originally started in 1967, taken over by the IDC in 2019 to boost local banana production, create jobs and reduce imports by supplying local and original markets. After significant investment and planting, the company began harvesting in 2021, with plans to expand into other fruits like avocados and mangoes, aiming for self-sufficiency and exports, creating dozens of local jobs.
MINING
Mwense district is endowed with minerals raging from Manganese and Copper, with mines opening up. so far, Mwense has a 2 mines operational in the District
